What is wild garden Film Festival?

Wild Garden Film Festival is a Long Beach based short film festival which platforms independent local filmmakers as a means to cultivate community and draw eyes to emerging talent. More than just a celebration of film, however, Wild Garden champions all manner of artistic expression through incorporating elements of live music and painting/photography exhibition.

OUR STORY

Wild Garden Film Festival was founded in 2024 by filmmaker & composer Spencer Frye. It began as an excuse to uplift talented, unrecognized artists he befriended at California State University Northridge. It was never intended to be a yearly venture, but something fascinating happened that first Wild Garden. The audience was quaint in size, but their engagement was potent.

What was it about these rough, low-budget films that inspired such a lucid audience? The answer was clear—these films may be imperfect, but they represent a genuine & raw creative expression. It since has become painfully clear that it is not only film enthusiasts who are starved of vulnerability & rawness in cinema—it is audiences everywhere. Thereafter, Spencer and his friends resolved to continue Wild Garden Film Festival as a means to spotlight the beauty of art that is imperfect and real.

OUR MISSION

In film school, students are taught that certain cinematic traits are necessary to the success of art—high camera quality, impervious sound design, seamless editing, etc. The implicit messaging is that the value of a film is determined by its technical merits. However, the idea that something as superficial as production quality can decide the value of art is egregious. It is industry propaganda designed to empower studio moguls and discourage artists from the independent pursuit of creation.

Wild Garden Film Festival is fundamentally a reversal of these Hollywood standards. Built and run by film students, Wild Garden endeavors to restore value in the true intention of art—authenticity of expression. If your art is true, it is worthy to be seen.
